Description
The Convair XF-92A was developed to demonstrate the feasibility of a delta wing fighter. Convair test pilot Sam Shannon was at the controls for the first flight on September 18, 1948 at Muroc AFB (later Edwards AFB). During its flight test program, the XF-92 reached Mach 1.05 and experienced good handling at slow speed. Overall, test pilots did not particularly care for the aircraft but, the delta wing configuration showed promise for future designs. This proved accurate for Convair with the F-102, F-106 and the B-58. The Air Force and NACA (later NASA) completed 95 test flights before the aircraft was retired. The sole XF-92A is on display at the National Museum of the USAF in Dayton, OH.
