Description
Inflight view of the Douglas X-3 Stiletto. First flown on October 15, 1952, the X-3’s unique pointed shape and low-aspect ratio wings, was designed to explore sustained supersonic flight with an aircraft that could takeoff and land on its own. The X-3 would not be required to be released from a mothership. A common occurrence at the time, the X-3 lacked performance due to insufficient engine thrust, and was not able to achieve Mach 1 in level flight. The X-3 required a 15 degree dive to reach Mach 1.1. Design and materials from the X-3 program were applied to future programs.
