Description
What Might Have Been: A conceptual view of a German Luftwaffe Ho 229 attacking two USAAF B-17Gs over Germany. Had the all-wing jet fighter been fielded during WWII, the results would have been devastating to Allied bombing efforts. However, limited resources due to Allied bombing, and other top priorities near the end of WWII in Europe, prevented the Ho 229 turbojet-powered flying wing from entering full production. The all-wing design had a wingspan of 55 feet, and the prototype was able to achieve speeds of over 600 mph. The third completed prototype was to have been armed with 30mm cannons. Unlike the Me 163B with its limited endurance rocket fuel, the turbojet-powered Ho 229 would have had enough loiter time to carry on repeated attacks. The flying wing was envisioned by Reimar and Walter Horten in 1933, who began experimenting with all-wing gliders in Germany.
