A look-down view an RAF Boeing E-3D Sentry AWACS (Airborne Early Warning and Control System) aircraft. Based on the civilian Boeing 707-320B airliner, the E-3 provides all-weather surveillance, command, control, and communications. The E-3 series have a distinctive pulse-Doppler radar mounted in a rotodome above the fuselage. The seven E-3D variants modified for the RAF are equipped with both the USAF flying boom system and the RAF probe-and-drogue air-to-air refueling system, and are powered by CFM56 high-bypass engines. Over all 68 E-3s were built by Boeing for the USAF and various export customers - production ended in 1992.
