Artist's Description

What might Have Been: Inflight view of a conceptual operational Soviet Air Force Myasishchev M-50A Bounder (Bort 21) supersonic strategic bomber. The M-50A was powered by four engines, two Dobrynin VD-7 non-afterburning engines on the outer wing stations and two VD-7F afterburning turbojet engines on the inner wing stations. During the height of the Cold War reports of this new design got the attention of the U.S. and NATO. However, during flight testing in secrecy the expected performance was never achieved. In its only public appearance on July 9, 1961, the M-50A accompanied by MiG-21s, flew over the Tushino Air Show. Numerous passes were made to give the news media the impression that a fleet of M-50 supersonic bombers existed. In reality, after 19 test flights the program was canceled. A second prototype (M-52) was built but never flown.
