On May 1, 1960 the Soviet Union shot down Gary Powers' U-2C reconnaissance aircraft. Before Surface to Air (SAM) missiles succeeded, they tried to ram the U-2C with a Su-9 fighter jet. From the book "Project Terminated" by Erik Simonsen

It had no control when he got to Powers' altitude and may of been by one of the sams fired at the U-2..
Erik Simonsen replied:
Michael- Yes, as I explain in my book, "Project Terminated", loss of control was the result when the Soviets attempted a "zoom climb" intercept. The MiG-19 contrails can be seen below 0 they had no chance with a standard intercept profile. An SA-2 SAM detonated close enough to down the U-2C. The Soviets were frustrated because it took a lot of SAMs before one got close - they even mistakenly shot down two of their own MiG-19s.

Not sure any Russian jet-fighter of that time could reach the U-2 - but it is a great image. :-)
Erik Simonsen replied:
Hartmut- The contrails of MiG-19s can be seen below - they had no chance of an intercept. The Su-9 attempted a "zoom climb" which usually results in an out of control situation. After many attempts, an SA-2 SAM finally got the U-2C.
