The Soviet Union's Buran Space Shuttle Head-on: An Antonov An-225 “Mriya” carrier aircraft with the “Buran” space shuttle mounted on top. After a series of atmospheric test flights using with a jet powered prototype, the unmanned operational orbiter K1 “Buran” was launched on November 15, 1988 and completed two orbits of Earth prior to landing on a runway. The Soviet space shuttle program was cancelled shortly afterward.
