What Might Have Been - During the height of the Cold War, USAF Convair B-58A Hustler was developed as a supersonic nuclear-capable medium bomber. During the mid-1960s “Project Bullseye” was initiated to test the feasibility of the B-58A in a conventional role and to improve bombing accuracy of “Pathfinder” operations in Vietnam. Reportedly, only one B-58A was painted in SEA camouflage, and as if the project had gone operational, this image depicts a test mission during 1967 of two ‘conceptual’ B-58A Hustlers (59-2428 & 59-2429). The underside of the lead B-58A reveals modifications to carry conventional munitions on bomb racks, and live testing of this capability took place in the U.S. In addition to carrying its own conventional payload, the primary mission of the B-58A would be to operate as a “Pathfinder”, utilizing its advanced bomb/navigation system and ECMs to lead groups of F-4 or F-105 tactical fighter/bombers.
