What Might Have Been - During the height of the Cold War, USAF Convair B-58A Hustler was developed as a supersonic nuclear-capable medium bomber. During the mid-1960s “Project Bullseye” was initiated to test the feasibility of the B-58A in a conventional role and to improve bombing accuracy of the Douglas EB-66B Destroyer “Pathfinder” operations in Vietnam. Reportedly, only one B-58A (59-2428) was painted in SEA camouflage and as if the project had proceeded, this image depicts a test flight during 1967. The aircraft was modified to carry conventional munitions with underside external bomb racks/hard points, and live testing of this capability took place in the U.S. In addition to carrying its own conventional payload, the primary mission of the B-58A would be to operate as a “Pathfinder”, utilizing its advanced bomb/navigation system and ECMs to lead groups of F-4 or F-105 tactical fighter/bombers.
