Description
The Boeing P-26 "Peashooter" was the first American production all-metal fighter and the first pursuit monoplane to enter squadron service with the U.S. Army Air Corps. The project funded by Boeing to produce its Model 248 began in September 1931, with the USAAC supplying the engines and the instruments. The XP-936 prototype first flew on March 20, 1932. With a top speed of 234 mph the P-26 was faster and outclimbed the current biplane fighters, and pilots praised the P-26 for its maneuverability. Impressed with the performance the U.S. Army ordered 136 production-model Peashooters, and 11 export variants.
