Description
Inflight view of the Rockwell International/MBB (Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm) X-31A EFM (Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability) technology demonstrator (t/n 164585). The X-31A EFM was the first international X–Plane, and two technology demonstrators were built at the Rockwell facility – USAF Plant 42, Palmdale, CA. The program was designed to test fighter thrust vectoring technology, utilizing a unique set of aft-mounted paddles. Thrust vectoring provides additional control authority in pitch and yaw, resulting in significantly more maneuverability than most conventional fighters. An advanced flight control system provided controlled flight at high angles of attack (AoA) where conventional aircraft would stall or lose control. With Rockwell's Chief Test Pilot and Director of Flight Test Ken Dyson in the cockpit, the X-31A EFM first flew on October 11, 1990.
